NEW YORK CITY — Luminous sun and balmy weather gave New Yorkers a tempting glimpse of spring on Sunday, but don't get your hopes up.

Meteorologists predict temperatures will take a nosedive back down to the single digits Monday night — with wind chills as low as eight below zero.

The polar air mass that is expected to descend on the city Monday night will keep temperatures in the teens through Tuesday, meteorologists warn.

On Wednesday, temperatures will creep up to the low 30s but fall back down with another gust of polar wind in the evening. Temperatures will remain in the low 20s on Thursday and Friday with a chance of light snow.

John Murray, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service, offered a realistic take on the seemingly endless winter weather.

"Sooner or later the weather has to match what's happening...We are becoming more tilted towards the sun," he said. "It'll be tougher to get these very cold air masses to stay within the region."
