THE BRONX — Emergency responders saved a boy trapped on the ice on the Bronx River Thursday afternoon, according to officials.
The boy got stuck out on the frozen river near Westchester Avenue at about 4:34 p.m., an FDNY spokesman said.
It took responders just a few minutes to get the child — believed to be 9 or 10 years old — to safety, according to officials.
One of the first responders who was wearing a cold-weather suit jumped into the icy water between the shore and where the child was trapped, but he was unable to climb onto the ice sheet, according to the fire department and video of the rescue by WABC.
Responders then lowered a ladder enabling the child to climb over the water to safety.
A girl who was with the boy reportedly fell into the water, but managed to get out and onto land before the responders arrived.
The boy was taken to Jacobi Hospital with minor injuries.
The responder who jumped into the water and the girl were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the FDNY.
A passerby described gratitude to the responders.
