Monday, January 5

January is a good time of year to get reacquainted with Anna and Elsa, the beloved heroines of Disney animated movie musical "Frozen." FiDi Families is kicking off its "Community Cube" event series with two free screenings and a "Frozen" family theme party at the South Street Seaport. Activities will include crafts and sing-alongs. Guests are encouraged to arrive in costume. "Frozen" will be shown at 10 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. No reservations are required. Space is limited, so arrive early. More information available here. 89 South St., Downtown.

Afterwards, "Frozen" fans young and old can imagine they're back in Arendelle as they glide along the South Street Seaport's ice rink, open to skaters from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Admission costs $10 and skate rentals are $6.

Does the cold really bother you anyway? Head down to Tropical Vortex Mondays, a new live concert series at Barbes, which showcases bands and DJs playing variations on Latin rhythms. This week's lineup includes a live performance by salsa/rumba/cumbia group Yotoco and a DJ set by Greenwood Rhythm Coalition. No cover, but donations of at least $10 are strongly suggested. 376 9th St. at 6th Avenue, Park Slope. 21+.

Kara Walker's monumental installation project, "A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby," was removed earlier this year from Williamsburg's abandoned Domino factory, but New Yorkers can still find the famed artist's work on view elsewhere in the city. Head to Sikkema Jenkins & Co.'s Chelsea gallery for "Afterward," a multimedia exhibition exploring the themes and elements of "A Subtlety." 530 W. 22nd St. Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, through Jan. 6.

Wednesday, January 7

American artist Romare Bearden's collage and watercolor cycle "Odysseus Series" has come home to New York, concluding a Smithsonian traveling tour with an exhibition in the city where it was first displayed. The series of works, inspired by African-American culture and Greek mythology, is on view at Columbia's Wallach Art Gallery through March 14, 2015. "Romare Bearden: A Black Odyssey" is curated by Columbia English and jazz scholar Robert G. O'Meally. Catch a free gallery tour at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, no reservations are required.
