NEW YORK CITY — A 44-year-old Brooklyn woman died Sunday afternoon after falling from a chairlift at the Hunter Mountain ski resort in upstate Hunter, N.Y., state police wrote in a statement.

Olga Filkin fell approximately 25 feet while riding a chair that goes halfway up the mountain about 2 p.m., the police and resort officials said. The cause of her death was determined to have been accidental and consistent with a fall, police said.

"She was treated immediately at the scene by members of the Hunter Mountain Ski Patrol and transported to the resort’s first aid room, where she was later pronounced dead," the resort said in a statement.

The fall occurred approximately 100 feet uphill from where the woman got on the chairlift, which could hold three people.  She was alone in the chair and the safety bar was engaged when the woman fell, police confirmed.

"I think it was when she was just getting ready to exit the lift,” said Greene County coroner Hassan Basagic.

The president of the resort, Russ Coloton, extended his condolences to Filikin's family.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” said Coloton. “We can only imagine what the family is going through, and we stand ready to assist them in any way that we can.”
