SUNNYSIDE — The neighborhood is getting a bit of green that will last year-round.

The weekly greenmarket at 43rd Street and Skillman Avenue will stay open through the winter for the first time this year, according to GrowNYC, which runs the outdoor farmers market.

"There was just enough of demand from the customers, and we had enough farmers who wanted to stay year-round," said Cheryl Huber, assistant director for the organization's Greenmarket program.

The Sunnyside Greenmarket, which runs on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., would normally end for the season in December, Huber said. But the market has enough vendors selling winter-friendly goods that it can continue to operate.

"They have orchard fruit, there's quite a few different meat producers, bakeries — things that can be sold year round," she said.

The Sunnyside Post first reported the news of the market's expansion.

The Sunnyside Greenmarket is one of 24 GrowNYC farmers markets in the city that are open all year, according to Huber. For more information, visit the organization's website. A holiday schedule for GrowNYC's greenmarkets can be found here.
