NEW YORK CITY — New York City doesn't sleep — or stop for holidays. There's plenty to do on Dec. 25 for those not celebrating Christmas.
Here are six things happening on Christmas Day:
Klez for Kids at the Museum on Eldridge Street at 12 Eldridge St. on the Lower East Side
In its 17th year, the Klez for Kids event at the Museum on Eldridge Street includes music, a tour of the historic synagogue and an audience-enacted shteltl wedding, a traditional Yiddish ceremony. The museum will be open from 10 a.m. with the event taking place in the beautifully-restored sanctuary. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Kids under the age of three are free.
Peking Duck at Hop Lee Restaurant at 16 Mott St. in Chinatown
At Hop Lee’s, which doesn’t accept reservations, a whole Peking duck goes for about $30 or $16 for half. There are plenty of other sides, like Chinese mushrooms in oyster sauce at $14.95, to round out the meal.
Catch a Broadway Show
While many of the Broadway shows are closed on Christmas day, a handful are still open including "Jersey Boys," "Mamma Mia" and "The Phantom of the Opera." Tickets are at regular prices — $75 for the cheap seats at the Phantom of the Opera. The TKTS booths in Times Square and South Street Seaport will be open for discounted same day tickets. The Brooklyn TKTS location will be closed.
Central Park, Queens and Prospect Park zoos will all operate as normal on Dec. 25. All three will be open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Tickets to the Queens and Prospect Park zoos are $8, and Central Park Zoo is $18.
Spa Castle in Midtown East or College Point
If a plethora of indoor and outdoor pools, saunas of all types, massages and beauty treatments are more your thing, Spa Castle is ready to accommodate guests like you on Christmas Day. The Midtown East location is at 115 E. 57th St. and College Point at 131-10 Eleventh Ave. Holiday prices do apply, so a day pass will cost $65 in Midtown and $50 at College Point.
Catch a Movie
There are plenty of movies launching on Christmas Day. “Unbroken,” the Angelina Jolie-directed true story of World War Two legend Louis Zamperini, will hit mainstream screens as will “Selma,” which stars Oprah Winfrey and details the Civil Rights Movement. Some independent theaters such as the IFC Center in Greenwich Village and the Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg will also be open.
