STATEN ISLAND — The Brooklyn Brewery has received a $6 million state grant to open a 200,000-square-foot Staten Island base.

The grant, part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's Regional Economic Development Council (REDC), will go towards the planned $70 million state-of-the-art brewing space on Staten Island with space to produce 400,000 barrels of beer and room to expand to 1 million, according to the grant.

Lack of real estate in Brooklyn and increased demand for their suds in 20 countries lead the famous craft brewery to look for space outside of their home borough, according to a blog post by the brewery.

The brewery's looking for 20- to 25- acres on Staten Island's West Shore near shipping ports and freight rails, according to a draft report on the proposal by the REDC.

Several other projects on Staten Island also got state funds as part of the fourth round of awards, including $1.55 million for the New York Wheel.

Also $1 million was awarded to restore the wetlands at Saw Mill Creek Marsh; $200,000 to complete a master plan for the revitalization of waterfront brownfield sites at Mariners Marsh and Arlington Marsh; and $50,000 for a feasibility study to create a Business Improvement District on the South Shore.
