RED HOOK — A 12-year-old boy was punched and beaten with a paintball gun by a teenager at a Red Hook school last week, police said

The victim got into a “verbal altercation” with a 13-year-old boy on Dec. 5 about 4:15 p.m. while playing basketball in the playground in front of P.S. 15 Patrick F. Daly School at 71 Sullivan St., according to the police report.

The 13-year-old, described as the victim’s “friend,” then punched the victim in the face, knocking him down, police said. He also grabbed the younger boy’s paintball gun and repeatedly hit him in the head with it, police added.

It was not immediately clear if the victim, who suffered from pain and cuts, was taken to a hospital.

The 13-year-old, whose name was not released, was arrested later that day about 6:50 p.m. near the school and charged with assault and unlawful possession of a weapon, police said.

The Department of Education did not immediately respond to request for comment.
