UPPER EAST SIDE — A truck that swerved to avoid hitting a car got stuck under scaffolding on 57th Street Monday, the driver said.

The northbound truck, operated by New Jersey-based KCJ Delivery Inc., was turning east from First Avenue onto East 57th Street about 1:45 p.m. when another car tried to make the same turn.

Jose Torres, the truck's driver, managed to avoid the car but got wedged under the scaffolding instead, he said.

"I was trying to avoid him, but it cut too close," said Torres, 46. "I was going to back it up, but a super ran out and told me, 'Don't.'"

Another witnesses said the scaffolding started to shake when Torres got stuck.

"He tried to back up maybe a foot and I heard crumbling noises and then he stopped. He was pinned under the scaffolding," said Frankie Mojica, 33, a maintenance worker in a nearby building.

Department of Buildings officials responded to the scene after receiving reports that the scaffolding, at 400 E. 57th St., was unstable, according to Buildings records.

The result was not clear.

No one was injured in the incident, the FDNY said.
