RED HOOK — A man was arrested last week and charged with murder — while another suspect remains on the loose — for gunning down a public housing tenant early last month, police said.

Omar Gray, 37, was arrested on Oct. 27 for shooting 53-year-old Howard Sterling in the leg on Oct. 5 at 70 Bush St. in Red Hook West Houses, where the victim lived, police said.

Gray, who acted along with another person who has not yet been arrested, punched, kicked and dragged Sterling while demanding property from him, according to a criminal complaint from the Brooklyn District Attorney's office.

Gray then shot Sterling in the leg, the complaint said.

Police, who responded to the scene about 11:30 a.m., found Sterling with a gunshot wound to his left leg, as well as cuts and bruises on his head, according to police and the criminal complaint. It was not clear how long it took authorities to respond after Sterling was shot.

He was taken to New York Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Gray was charged with murder in the second degree, attempted robbery and criminal possession of a weapon, the DA said.

Gray's attorney Barry Krinsky declined to comment.

A description of the second man was not immediately available.
