Friday, November 7

This weekend at PoetryFest, the Irish Arts Center invites you to hear language “as it is meant to be celebrated” — through the voices of some of the best contemporary poets from Ireland and the U.S. Performers include Pulitzer Prize-nominee Robert Pinsky, celebrated Irish poet Rita Ann Higgins, and former NJ State Poet Laureate Gerald Stern. Friday’s event, “Favorite Poems,” features Irish Arts Center friends and special guests reading a selection of personally chosen best-loved poems, followed by an after-party with the poets. From 8 p.m., at Donaghy Theatre, Irish Arts Center, 553 W 51st St., Midtown. $35.

Described accurately as “an uncommon exhibit,” “Fries Of New York” is an exhibition featuring over one hundred different french fries collected from around New York City, including steak fries, straight cuts and wedge fries from dining establishments such as Smith & Wollensky, Balthazar and Katz’s Delicatessen. Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. at 168 Bowery at Kenmare St., Lower East Side. Free.

Saturday, November 8
DUMBO will be illuminated Saturday evening by the first annual New York Festival of Light. The Festival features a curated collection of lighting installations created by local and international lighting designers, performance artists and technologists who work within the medium of light. Under the Manhattan Bridge, DUMBO, from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. Free.

Melanie Aguirre, co-founder of street dance collective Rep Your Style, is hosting the first-ever all-women Lite Feet and Flex exhibition showcase from 6 to 8 p.m. Lite Feet and Flex are two original New York City street dance forms: Lite Feet founded in Harlem, and Flex started in Brooklyn. The showcase is preceded by a lecture and demonstration beginning at 3 p.m. It's a part of the “No Such Thing as Neutral” the research project of BCRW Alumnae Fellow Ali Rosa-Salas ’13. At Barnard College’s Diana Center, 3009 Broadway, Upper West Side. Free.

Sunday, November 9
The Winter Flea and Holiday Market kicks off this weekend, taking over a 30,000 square foot indoor space in Crown Heights. The market features over 100 vintage and antique stalls alongside 25 food vendors. Saturday and Sunday at 1000 Dean St., between Classon and Franklin, Crown Heights.

Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire” a Costume Institute show, is organized chronologically, and features mourning dress from 1815 to 1915, primarily from The Costume Institute's collection. Including gowns worn by Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra, the exhibition displays historic photographs and jewelry in order to provide a snapshot of funerary culture through women’s clothing and accessories. Through February 1 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 5th Avenue, Upper East Side.
