RED HOOK — Assemblyman Felix Ortiz defeated his first serious Democratic challenger in years to win the primary for his District 51 state Assembly seat Tuesday night.
Ortiz, who has held the office for almost two decades, received 70.7 percent of the vote with 85.5 percent of precincts reporting, according to the Associated Press via WNYC.
The longtime lawmaker beat Ceasar Zuniga, a member of Community Board 7 and a Sunset Park resident who ended the night with 29.3 percent of the vote.
There is no Republican candidate for the District 51 seat, which covers Red Hook, South Slope, Greenwood Heights and Sunset Park.
It's a new day and off to a fresh start! Thank you for a great victory! Our campaign represented the best #progressive politics #SiSePuede
