Beach season is reason enough to visit the Rockaways, but the Queens peninsula holds hidden attractions for surfers and art fans alike. A large group exhibition at Rockaway Beach Surf Club, a laid-back beach shack and restaurant/bar that served as a major relief center after Hurricane Sunday, will feature works by Marina Abramovic, Asha Fuller, Ugo Rondinone, and more than 70 other artists. Rockaway!, presented by MoMA PS1 and the Honolulu Biennial, "celebrates the efforts of the Rockaway community of surfers and artists in rebuilding their neighborhood."  It's on view Monday through Friday from noon until midnight and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until midnight, through Sept. 1. Admission is free.  At the corner of Beach 87th and Rockaway Freeway, Rockaway Beach.

Brooklyn crafting queen Brett Bara and her DIY team want to help beginner tailors and seamstresses enjoy the fruits of their own labor. Learn to cut fabric, insert a waistband, and stitch seams with a sewing machine at this one-evening workshop. The class is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to about 9:30 p.m. and costs $75. Advance registration and ticket purchase is required. Brooklyn Craft Company is located at 61 Greenpoint Ave.

Would-be superheroes of all ages can cheer on their favorite characters at Marvel Universe LIVE!, the touring live-action adventure show. More than 20 heroes and villains will battle in an original drama with lots of superhuman feats and stunning effects. Catch it at Barclays Center Aug. 13-17. Showtimes are 11 a.m., 1 p.m, 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.  Tickets cost $25-$120.

For an evening slightly less epic, but equally family-friendly, check out Movie Nights Along the River's free screening of "The Croods," the 2013 animated feature about a family of brave cavemen, at Hunts Point Riverside Park in the Bronx. Bring blankets and a picnic and set up before showtime at 8 p.m. In case of rain, the screening will be rescheduled for following evening. Lafayette Avenue and Edgewater Road in Hunts Point Riverside Park, Bronx.

Take a look at work processes of the craftspeople who helped build this city at NYC Makers: The MAD Biennial at Museum of Arts and Design, on view through Oct. 12. The exhibit showcases the work of over 100 artisans, artists, and designers, selected by a jury led by museum director Glenn Adamson and exhibition curator Jake Yuzna. A series of tableaus, many designed to resemble production studios, will juxtapose the work of makers in fashion, journalism, architecture, culinary arts, and other fields.  The Museum of Arts and Design is located at 2 Columbus Circle near Broadway and West 58th, Midtown West. Galleries are open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m, and Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday night admission is pay-what-you-wish from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

If you've been to the Brooklyn Museum, you've likely walked by the Jane and David Walentis Fountain just outside the entrance. Tonight, take a seat on the steps of the museum and enjoy "Score the Fountain," a performance of original scores created to accompany the fountain's playful rhythms, as captured in this video. Museum staff selected the compositions from a number of entries submitted by musicians and producers of all genres. 6:30 p.m., 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn.

After the show, check out "Swoon: Submerged Motherlands," "Divine Felines: Cats of Ancient Egypt," or another of the museum's exhibits. On Thursdays, the galleries are open until 10 p.m.
