BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — A rookie police officer celebrated his first year on the force by helping arrest three men seen fleeing the scene of a shooting early Wednesday, police said.

Officer Mohamed Mohamed of the NYPD's public housing bureau helped chase down and arrest Bernard Bellony, 19, Ruben Pabon, 23, and Sylvester Roberts, 25, after hearing shots fired near Bed-Stuy's Sumner Houses around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

A loaded handgun was recovered nearby, according to the NYPD.

Officers from Crown Heights' 77th Precinct assigned to a critical response vehicle in Bed-Stuy heard the shots coming from 991 Myrtle Ave. and radioed in the information before giving chase, police said.

Mohamed, a 23-year-old Egyptian-born Queens resident, and partner James Paris happened to be driving nearby in a marked van along with their lieutenant, and saw the three suspects running south on Marcus Garvey Boulevard, police sources said.

The three officers gave chase as the suspects turned on to Ellery Street, dumping the gun, according to the NYPD.

Mohamed, who on Wednesday celebrated exactly one year on the job, caught both Bellony and Pabon at Fayette Street and Broadway, and finally arrested Roberts nearby after he pushed a 13-year-old girl to the ground in a desperate attempt to flee, police said.

According to the NYPD, a loaded 9 mm Hi-Point handgun along with three shell casings and one live round were recovered from the scene.

Bellony was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and tampering with physical evidence, Pabon was charged with disorderly conduct and Roberts was charged with assault and endangering a child, according to police.

All three were charged with resisting arrest, police said.
