Seven new gourmet food trucks are headed to Governors Island, including Thai and Vietnamese fusion truck Sweet Chili, Mayhem & Stout, known for its braised meat sandwiches, and Mexican-BBQ fusion truck Mike N' Willie's, according to a press release.
The Island, which kicks off its summer season May 24, will be open to the public daily for the first time this year. But the gourmet trucks, which also include Momos & Buns, known for its dumplings, DiSO’s Italian Sandwich Society and El Paso Taco, will only be open on weekends and during summer holidays.
Along with the trucks, more than 30 new acres of parkland will also be ready for Governors Island visitors starting May 24. Free bikes will also be available for rides on weekday mornings. A host of free arts and music events are on tap for the Island, as well.
Over at the South Street Seaport, a different crew of about eight food trucks is making its way to Fulton Street this weekend. Gourmet trucks include the Milk Truck, which serves up fancy grilled cheese sandwiches, The Mac Truck, known for its varieties of mac and cheese, as well as trucks serving up Philly cheese steaks and souvlaki, according to Telly Hatzigeorgiou, former owner of the Beekman Beer Garden at Pier 17, who's running the food truck program.
The food trucks will be parked along Fulton Street daily, and are part of Seaport developer Howard Hughes Coporation's See/Change effort, a program meant to bring visitors to the area as construction and the lingering effects of Hurricane Sandy have closed many storefronts. Summertime movies and concerts are are also planned for the neighborhood.
The food trucks will replace SmorgasBar, an outdoor food market curated by the Brooklyn Flea that popped up on Front Street last summer. There is less space this year because of new construction, so SmorgasBar could not return, a Howard Hughes spokesman had said.
Hours for the Governors Island food trucks are 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday and summer holidays, including Memorial Day. For more information on Governors Island food trucks, as well as its summer events, check here.
