FLATIRON — A Japanese pub serving small plates and more than 60 varieties of sake is opening in Flatiron in May.

Izakaya NoMad, at 13 W. 26th St. near Broadway, will offer small plates including yakitori, sashimi, soups and grilled fish-of-the-day specials to pair with the extensive list of sake, said co-owner Moku Kim.

Izakaya is defined as a pub, a destination for after work, where people can relax and have a bite,” said Kim. “In an izakaya, the proprietor doesn’t mind if you get drunk. It’s about forgetting about work and enjoying yourself as much as possible.”

Most of the ingredients on the menu will be sourced locally, including the yakitori, made with free-range chicken from Brooklyn’s LaPera Bros. Poultry, Kim said.

Prices of small plates will range from $2 to $30, he said.

“It’s not traditional food — it’s bar food,” Kim explained. “But we want to keep everything as local as possible and have an authentic taste.”

Kim is still making selections for the pub’s sake list, but he noted that it would include everything from a $7 can of sake to a $1,000 bottle.

The bar will also include a selection of Japanese and craft beers, he said.

The pub features an open kitchen and bar near the front, along with a communal table, private booths and a row of concrete tables in the back.

The spaces will be broken up by the vinyl-print artwork on the walls, which will showcase up-and-coming artists and change periodically, Kim said.

“It’s like a maze of unique spaces,” he said. “You get a different feeling every time you come in.”

Izakaya NoMad, which is still under construction, will open in mid-May. It will be open from 5 p.m. to midnight on weekdays and 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.

The bar will open seven days a week beginning in September, when it will also add a lunch menu.
