European-Inspired Kosher Steakhouse Opens in Midtown

MIDTOWN — This steakhouse isn't afraid to go raw.

La Brochette, a kosher steakhouse and sushi bar with a European twist, recently launched in Midtown and is gearing up for a grand opening party early next month.

The restaurant quietly held its soft opening earlier this year, but it will mark its official debut on Sunday, Dec. 1, with a fete set for Monday, Dec. 9, operators said.

The four-floor restaurant, owned by Avi Cohen, serves 28-day aged handcut steaks, plus Continental and Asian-influenced selections such as crispy veal sweetbreads, short-rib spring rolls and duck a l'orange.

"We have lunch that's very busy, and people don't want to eat very heavy stuff in the morning, so the sushi is a good combination," said Cohen, 40.

He added that the menu's diverse selection also ensures a wide number of options for kosher eaters "who cannot always easily go every place to eat."

The restaurant, located at 340 Lexington Ave. between 39th and 40th streets, opened in a space previously home to La Carne Grill. While that restaurant had a different owner, La Carne's executive chef Angel Ramirez never left and will serve as executive chef at La Brochette.

The restaurant's appetizers range from $12 to $36, and entrees from $24 to $58. A range of kosher wines and cocktails are also available.

La Brochette is Cohen's second restaurant. He also owns Taam Tov on West 47th Street, which serves kosher kebabs and other Mediterranean selections to the Diamond District lunch crowd.

"An upscale restaurant was always my dream," explained Cohen, who lives in Forest Hills. "Make it nice, deluxe kosher, have people come on dates."

La Brochette joins other high-end kosher steakhouses in Midtown, including Wolf and Lamb on East 48th Street and Prime Grill on West 56th Street.
