QUEENS — Eleven people were injured when a massive fire roared through a Kew Gardens apartment building Tuesday night, leaving residents scrambling for safety, the FDNY said.

The blaze erupted on the third floor of the seven building at 84-70 129th St., near Metropolitan Avenue, about 7 p.m. and quickly climbed up to the sixth floor, the FDNY said.

Three residents and eight firefighters were treated for minor injuries at Jamaica Hospital and North Shore Hospital, an FDNY spokesman said.

Photos showed firefighters helping two people who were trapped on the fire escape as flames shot out from a nearby window.

Five families received temporary housing from the Red Cross while the rest of those displaced were able to relocate themselves, a spokesman for the organization said.

About 170 firefighters raced to the scene and finally brought the blaze under control about 9:15 p.m., the FDNY said.
