MIDTOWN — A high-powered Midtown law firm has launched what it says is the first practice exclusively dedicated to representing college and amateur athletes.

Winston & Strawn LLP, whose New York office is in the MetLife Building on Park Avenue, aims to "provide comprehensive legal services to clients involved in all aspects of college and amateur athletics," the 900-attorney firm said in a press release, including representing universities facing NCAA investigations for rules violations.

"Our sports law practice is regularly adverse to sports leagues and associations in litigations and arbitrations, making a college sports practice a natural extension," said partner Jeffrey Kessler, a co-chair of the new sports practice.

The firm at large has represented a range of clients in the athletic world. It led the antitrust challenges to the 2011 NFL and NBA lockouts, and it represented the National Invitation Tournament in its antitrust suit against the NCAA.
