FLATIRON — A hypothetical backpacking trip from France to Algeria inspired a new restaurant opening in Flatiron later this month.
1200 Miles, which will open in the 31 W. 21st St. space that was previously home to Prandial, will feature new American cuisine combined with French, Spanish, Italian and Moroccan flavors that travelers could taste on a 1,200-mile backpacking route between Paris and Algiers, said restaurant spokesman Steven Hall.
“[The] cuisine reflects the heritage of the chef’s French-born Algerian mother,” Hall said of Pierre Rougey. “Twelve-hundred miles is the approximate distance between the two cities, Paris and Algiers.”
Rougey and owner Mark Stern opened Prandial last summer in the same space, but after a year decided to close the American restaurant and reopen it with a new name and concept.
1200 Miles' menu will feature traditional French dishes such as smoked duck terrine and brandade de morue, a salt cod dish, as well as grilled octopus from Catalonia, Spain, and lamb tagine from Morocco, according to the restaurant’s website.
The restaurant is expected to open by the last week of September, Hall said
