WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — When New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Canó isn't spending his time crushing home runs and snagging grounders in the Bronx, he's getting some classic Dominican food in northern Manhattan.
That's the message behind a new marketing campaign unveiled by the city's tourism arm, which aims to highlight local shops and restaurants in Washington Heights and Harlem.
The two neighborhoods are featured in NYC and Company's latest "Neighborhood X Neighborhood" campaign. The initiative, unveiled Wednesday, includes a video of the Yankees' superstar naming his favorite uptown spots.
In the video, featured on the Neighborhood x Neighborhood website, Canó highlights Jordan's MVP Barbershop on Broadway and West 189th Street, and Inwood's Guadalupe Bar and Grill and Mamajuana Cafe.
“Playing in New York is special to me because you are surrounded by so many communities and a strong Latin community, including the Washington Heights neighborhood,” said Canó in a statement announcing the campaign. “I come to Washington Heights for real Dominican food that reminds me of my hometown, and it's a great place to visit.”
Though not included in the Canó video, Harlem is featured throughout campaign website, including the Apollo Theater, Billie's Black, and Studio Museum.
“The Harlem and Washington Heights communities have rich cultural legacies that continue to thrive,” said Deputy Cultural Affairs Commissioner Margaret Morton. “From the iconic stages at the Apollo Theater and Harlem Stage, to the rich collections of the Cloisters and Studio Museum, arts organizations in these neighborhoods provide extraordinary opportunities for visitors and residents to engage with a wide range of unique cultural activities.”
