NEW YORK CITY — The headaches for Long Island Rail Road commuters were expected to continue Tuesday night with more cancellations and delays while crews repair damage caused by Monday night's train derailment.
Service on all 11 LIRR lines was diverted, canceled or delayed during the morning rush after a Hempstead-bound train went off the tracks inside one of Amtrak’s East River tunnels just after 6 p.m., officials said. No injuries were reported.
Service was expected to run close to its normal schedule Tuesday afternoon, but the delays and cancellations were slated to resume in the evening as work continued, officials said.
While employees worked to get the tunnel operating again, 35 to 40 trains were being canceled or diverted to Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn or Hunterspoint Avenue in Queens Tuesday morning, officials said.
The MTA planned to cross-honor fares to the 2, 3, 7 and E lines, according to its website.
The backups frustrated commuters.
“The LIRR seriously might be the most incompetent company in the world, way to ruin my tuesday commute,” tweeted Joe Antonucci.
“Unscheduled Hicksville stop,” tweeted Tracy Watson. “This won’t end well, right?”
