BROOKLYN — The 2013 NBA Draft is coming to Brooklyn for the first time as the Barclays Center will host the event this summer, league officials announced.

The draft, in which professional basketball teams select eligible players to join the league, will be held on June 27.

The new venue, where the Brooklyn Nets play home games, is an excellent location for such a large-scale event, said NBA Commissioner David Stern.

"In addition to being a state-of-the-art arena, Barclays Center has quickly become a go-to destination for world class events,” Stern said in a statement. “We are confident Barclays Center is an ideal venue for introducing the next generation of NBA stars to a global audience."

Ticket sales will begin May 22 with prices at $20 and $35.

“Many of the borough's greatest all-time players have been drafted into the NBA, making this night a perfect fit for Brooklyn,” said Brett Yormark, chief executive officer for Barclays Center and the Nets, in a statement.

Barclays Center, which opened Sept. 28, 2012, has served as the location for major sports and entertainment events. It will also host MTV’s Video Music Awards in August, the network announced last month.
