Goodbye, Sailor! Fleet Week Canceled Amid Federal Sequester Budget Cuts

NEW YORK — Anchors away!

White-suited seamen and tall Navy ships will not stream to New York City this summer for Fleet Week because of budget cuts imposed by the federal sequester, organizers announced Wednesday.

"We're not sending ships to the city this year for Fleet Week, and we're not sending any additional personnel for Fleet Week," United States Navy spokeswoman Beth Baker said.

Instead, the Navy will send personnel stationed locally to run a trimmed-down series of events in the Big Apple.

"Using local personnel, we will coordinate those events," Baker said. "Certainly there won't be so many. But we will have a presence that weekend."

Fleet Week events were scheduled for May 22 to 29.
