CARROLL GARDENS — A Smith Street restaurateur is launching a semiannual magazine, celebrating women in the food industry.
Cherry Bombe, releasing in May, will feature women in the food world, from chefs to food stylists and servers, said Kerry Diamond, who is starting the magazine with her former Harper’s Bazaar colleague Claudia Wu.
“We just thought there was room for a beautifully designed food magazine,” said Diamond, who co-owns Smith Canteen, Seersucker and Vietnamese eatery Nightingale 9.
The food world can often be very guy-centric, said Diamond, which gave her the idea to showcase women with interesting jobs in the industry.
The first issue of Cherry Bombe, called “The Tastemakers Issue,” includes stories from a female BBQ pit-master and homage to a young chef’s grandmother. Within these stories, recipes are interwoven into the articles, said Diamond, who hopes the issue will appeal to women who care about food and design.
Most of the magazine contributors are women – people who the duo have met and admired over the years, she said. There are even a few Brooklyn locals in the mix like Victoria Granof, “the queen of food stylists,” said Diamond, along with local photographers and Elizabeth Thacker Jones, founder of the food book fair.
“There’s a lot of Brooklyn in the first issue,” said Diamond.
In April, Diamond and Wu launched a Kickstarter campaign for Cherry Bombe and with just 10 days to go, they’re close to reaching their $30,000 goal for printing and shipping costs. In the first run, they plan to print 10,000 copies, according to the project.
Cherry Bombe will also be donating $1 from each issue to the Edible Schoolyard Project, an organization that brings interactive food education to classrooms.
