Girl Hurt in Fall From Queens Apartment Building

QUEENS — A 12-year-old girl fell from an apartment building in Queens on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

The victim, who officials believe is 12 years old, fell from 35-55 73rd St. in Jackson Heights at 3:54 p.m., the FDNY said.

The girl was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where her condition was not immediately known, officials said.

Sally Espenil, 50, was outside the building talking to the superintendent when the mother of the victim burst outside and cried for help.

"She was saying, 'Help me, my baby! She [fell] from the window!" Espenil said.

Espenil then hurried around the rear of the building, where she saw the victim on the ground.

"She was saying, 'I can't breathe, I can't breathe,'" Espenil said.

Moises Maloof, 34, said he saw "six or seven" paramedics working on the victim, who landed on the grassy area behind the building and not the concrete, which may have cushioned her fall.

"She was conscious [after she landed]," said Maloof, who lives on the fourth floor of the building, same as the victim.

Police said the investigation was ongoing. It was not immediately clear how the girl fell.
