KIPS BAY — An elderly man was critically injured during a predawn apartment fire on East 34th Street Wednesday, officials said.
The victim, believed to be in his 60s but whose identity was not immediately released, was inside his fifth floor apartment at 316 E. 34th St. when a blaze tore through it about 4:30 a.m., FDNY and NYPD officials said.
The man suffered minor burns and inhaled smoke, officials said. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, they added.
Two firefighters were also treated for minor injuries, an FDNY spokesman said.
The cause of the blaze, which was contained to the victim's top-story apartment, is still under investigation, fire officials said.
