Boutique Hotel Highlights Brooklyn Artists With In-Room Murals

COBBLE HILL — The Nu Hotel Brooklyn is hosting an art show featuring five rooms that have been transformed with murals by local Brooklyn artists.

The event, on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m., will highlight the work of these artists who have created floor-to-ceiling murals in five of the hotel's 93 rooms. Artist work will also be exhibited in the hotel lobby.

The event will kick off at neighborhood art gallery and tattoo shop Urban Folk Art/Brooklyn Tattoo at 6 p.m. The boutique hotel, at 85 Smith St., will then host the art exhibition and open-house, followed by a reception with complimentary vodka by Brooklyn Republic Vodka, then an after-party at Bar Tabac at 128 Smith St., from 9 p.m. onward.

The "Nu Perspectives," as the mural project is called, was conceived as a way to give guests a unique experience of Brooklyn, said Jennifer Goodman, member of the management team at the hotel.

Each artist has painted one wall of the room with a mural of their design, including a panoramic view of the borough, a pencil sketch-like drawing of Brownstone Brooklyn, and a scene with the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The room also features works of art by the same mural designer.

"It definitely reflects the Brooklyn art scene," Goodman said.

The five rooms were chosen for their large space and location in the interior space of the hotel, overlooking the courtyard. The murals were a way for guests to have their own view of Brooklyn, Goodman said. The rooms' pristine white walls also gave them an "almost gallery-like feel," making them a perfect canvas for the artists, she added.

Since it opened in 2008, Nu Hotel has hosted a number of art shows and exhibitions, representing neighborhood artists "who may not have gallery space," Goodman said.

While the hotel has several pieces of art from local artists, this is its first permanent art installation. "It's the most extensive art project we've done," General Manager Javier Egipciaco said.

"We have evolved into a 100 percent art-centric hotel."

Egipciaco said the hotel plans to continue highlighting the work of artists in the community through future installations at the Nu Hotel, "the perfect palette for the local artist."
