3-Year-Old Girl Critically Hurt in Fall From Fifth-Floor Window in Queens

QUEENS — A 3-year-old girl was critically hurt in a fall from a fifth-floor window in Woodside Sunday afternoon, officials said.

The girl fell from a window at 53-01 32nd Ave., near 51st Street, just after 2:30 p.m., after she and her sibling apparently locked themselves inside of a bathroom in their apartment, officials and witnesses said.

After discovering that the kids were locked in the bathroom, the children's frantic parents called Hazir Abdyli, the building's super, who said he rushed up to help.

Abdyli broke down the bathroom door, but when he got it open, he was startled to see only one child inside, not two, he said.

"The window in the bathroom was a little open," Abdyli said. "I went out in the hallway because I could see the backyard, and the kid was lying there on the ground. I called 911."

The girl's parents raced outside, where the child was lying in the snowy courtyard where she had fallen.

"One of the women from the building ran outside saying, 'A baby just fell out of the window,'" said Ira Oppenheim, 52, who has lived in the building for 12 years. "The father came rushing out saying, 'My daughter, my daughter.'"

The young girl was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital in critical but stable condition, police said.

"It's a long way down," Oppenheim said. "Thank God there was a lot of snow."

Police were investigating the circumstances of the girl's fall.
