Airports Stop Running Flights As Snowstorm Pounds City

NEW YORK — The region's airports grounded all flights early Friday evening, as Winter Storm Nemo pounded the city with wind and snow.

JFK Airport stopped running flights at 6:30 p.m., while LaGuardia Airport ceased all flights at 4 p.m., Gov. Andrew Cuomo said as he declared a State of Emergency for New York. Stewart Airport stopped flights at 4:45 p.m., and Newark Airport stopped them at 4 p.m., Cuomo said.

Even as more than 2,300 flights were canceled, the airports remained open and distributed cots and blankets to stranded travelers, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

The Port Authority directed travelers to check with individual airlines, or websites such as FlightAware.com or FlightStats.com for the latest flight updates.

The winter storm was expected to bring 10 to 14 inches of snow to the metropolitan area.

Some private bus carriers were also canceling routes. The Port Authority bus terminal, however, as well as the authority's bridges and tunnels, remained open as of Friday evening.

Vehicles on the George Washington Bridge were restricted to 35 miles per hour because of the hazardous conditions, and pedestrians and cyclists were barred from using the bridge's sidewalk, the Port Authority said.

PATH trains were running as scheduled, but the authority warned that "weather conditions may affect operations at Port Authority facilities."
