City Bakery Offers Unique Hot Chocolate Flavors for Each Day in February

UNION SQUARE — City Bakery's annual Hot Chocolate Festival, offering a unique flavor of hot chocolate for every day in February, is making some fans wish it wasn't the shortest month of the year.

The festival's lineup includes uncommon flavors like Moulin Rouge, Vietnamese Cinnamon, and Love Potion, as well as more traditional flavors like dark chocolate, milk chocolate and vanilla bean.

“Each of the flavors has its own constituency,” said Maury Rubin, City Bakery owner. “The dark chocolate is more serious and the milk chocolate with vanilla bean is a friendly flavor — it’s something that your uncle visiting from Kansas would like very much.”

While some flavors, like the bakery’s newest flavor Black Rum and Cinnamon, are self-explanatory, other flavors are more mysterious.

For instance, the Moulin Rouge flavor is made from dark chocolate, espresso, pomegranate and lemon, Rubin said.

In the Sunken Treasure version, chocolate truffles and caramel coins are laid under the hot chocolate, he explained.

“It's unreal," said Amy Young, 25, a patron of City Bakery, as she sipped the decadent drink Wednesday, "The first thing I think of is that scene in Willy Wonka when Augustus gets trapped in the chocolate river. It's delicious and rich."

Tim Arand, 38, cozied up to a cup of original hot chocolate topped with a homemade marshmallow,

"It's melted chocolate as opposed to the mixed kind. It's not quite dark enough for me, but the house-made marshmallows are very good," Arand said.

City Bakery is located at 3 West 18th Street For a full list of hot chocolate flavors for each day, visit www.thecitybakery.com.
