Sudden Heat Wave Warms New York City

NEW YORK CITY — Despite the overcast skies and threat of a storm, a winter thaw was in place Saturday and New Yorkers basked in the sudden break from blustery chills more common to January.

Highs were in the 40s on Friday, and reached 48 degrees by midday Saturday across the city, with sun even making small peeks by mid-afternoon. On Sunday the high was predicted to reach 58 degrees but include intermittent rain, according to Accuweather.com.

Dampness and drizzle started out the weekend, but that didn't stop some New Yorkers from getting their dose of outdoor fun.

"I'm enjoying the weather. It's like a warm winter and reminds of the weather in England," said Karla, 55, an Inwood resident strolling in Inwood Hill Park Saturday with her companion Jim, 62. Neither wished to give their last names. "It's better than walking through the slush and the cold."

Joe Applegate, 62, a recent transplant to Brooklyn Heights from Vermont, enjoyed a barbecue on Friday at the Brooklyn Bridge Park, while musing about taking ambling around Brooklyn Heights over the weekend.

"We're here fair weather or foul," said Applegate, a reporter-turned-playwright.

Zach Smith, 25, who walked through the park Friday, said it was hard to train his brain off thinking about baseball in the face of such solidly spring-like temperatures.

"It sounds like the perfect weather for a ballgame," said Smith, a devoted New York Yankees fan. "It's going to be tough to come to terms with the fact that I have to wait another three months for the season to start."

A front bringing "seasonably cold" air was expected to return by Tuesday, according to Accuweather.com, which predicted the arrival of an arctic front to the area by late Thursday and early Friday.
