Seven More Schools Placed on Chopping Block by City

By Jill Colvin | January 8, 2013 3:17pm

NEW YORK CITY — Seven more struggling schools have been placed on the chopping block throughout the city — joining the 17 that were placed on the list Monday, the Department of Education announced Tuesday.

The newest additions to the list include J.H.S. 013 Jackie Robinson in East Harlem and P.S. 050 Clara Barton in The Bronx.

The DOE is also planning to eliminate the middle schools for two additional schools — P.S. 156 Laurelton in Queens and the Academy for Social Action: A College Board School in West Harlem, where a 14-year-old girl released Mace into a classroom sending nine students to the hospital in November 2011.

The DOE has now pegged two dozen new schools for closure or phase-out, a process that allows schools to eliminate one grade at a time as students graduate. Of the 24, nine received 'F's and 13 scored 'D's on their latest progress reports. The remaining two have received three 'C's in a row.

The latest round of closures is expected to be the last on Mayor Michael Bloomberg's watch.

Deputy Chancellor Marc Sternberg repeated Tuesday that all of the closure decisions were made after gathering feedback from the community and a careful assessment of whether schools had the potential to turn around.

“We expect success," said Sternberg in a statement. "After a rigorous review of academic performance.... we know we can better serve our students and families with new options and a new start."

The school-closure program has been widely criticized by the teachers’ union and parent advocates, who complain the city should be investing more to improve schools instead of shutting them down.

"It’s sad that this administration takes pride in closing schools rather than helping them succeed," United Federation of Teachers president Michael Mulgrew said in a statement Monday.
