EAST NEW YORK — A fire tore through a residential building in East New York early Tuesday, officials said.
At approximately 9:50 a.m., sixty firefighters responded to a call at 580 Sutter Ave. — an affordable housing complex known as the Remeeder Houses — officials said.
The flames, which witnesses said burned in a fifth-floor apartment, were under control at approximately 10:16 a.m., according to the Fire Department. Nobody was hurt in the fire.
The FDNY has yet to determine the cause of the blaze, but it is being treated as a "non-suspicious" incident, a spokesman said.
Bob Barbour, who has lived on the sixth floor for the last three years, said he rushed out of the building.
"I was watching TV when I heard an explosion, like a boom noise, and smoke started to come out of the radiator," he said.
"We used the stairway to evacuate, and the fifth floor was smoked out, the whole fifth floor. "We got out real quick."
