KIPS BAY — Come Friday, Kips Bay will finally get its very own Fairway.
Fairway has pledged to open the doors to its fourth Manhattan location at 10 a.m. Friday. The store announced its firm opening date via Facebook and Twitter last week, with a tongue in cheek nod to the timing of its debut, which coincides with the day the ancient Mayans predicted to be the end of the world.
“The world wouldn't dare end!” the company tweeted on Friday. “We're opening @FairwayMarket #KipsBay on 12-21-12 at 10AM!!!”
The supermarket originally anticipated an opening date some time in November when it announced back in June that it was moving into 42,000 square feet of space on Second Avenue near East 30th Street.
But at a Community Board 6 meeting this month, Bill Sanders, Fairway’s president, said Hurricane Sandy had caused a few delays and that the new goal was to open before Christmas.
Fairway’s arrival has been hotly anticipated, and residents took to social media to share their excitement about the new shopping destination in the neighborhood.
"Hooray! Love you guys!” Susan Cobb Levine wrote on Facebook.
“Looking forward to the opening,” Marianne Ryan PT added on Facebook. “It will be great to have a Fairway in the area.”
