MADISON SQUARE GARDEN — Hurricane Sandy was no match for these rock legends.
From New Jersey rockers Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, to the cream of British rock royalty The Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton and Paul McCartney, the collection of stars onstage for the 12-12- 12 The Concert For Sandy Relief at Madison Square Garden Wednesday night was staggering.
Many of the performances were one-of-a-kind, including Springsteen playing with Bon Jovi on "Who Says You Can't Go Home," Roger Waters and Eddie Vedder performing Pink Floyd's classic "Comfortable Numb, and Coldplay's Chris Martin and REM's Michael Stipe dueting on "Losing My Religion."
Classic rockers The Rolling Stones, Clapton, McCartney and The Who brought it home, playing favorite after favorite, while a soulful Alicia Keys and a leather kilt-wearing Kanye West added some pop to the show. Long Island native Billy Joel then brought the house down with "New York State of Mind."
The concert was broadcast worldwide to some 2 billion viewers and acted as a telethon of sorts for the Robin Hood Relief Fund for those affected by Sandy.
