Boerum Hill Gallery Hosts Horror-Inspired Toy Show

By Heather Holland | November 15, 2012 3:12pm

BOERUM HILL — MF Gallery will host its annual horror-inspired toy show again this year, gathering handcrafted toys made by independent artists.

The toys in next month's show, which have a price range of about $20-$100, are usually horror-inspired and meant for adults, said Martina Secondo Russo, who owns MF Gallery with her husband Frank.

“They are poppy and colorful and cute, but at the same time kind of dark and a little monsterous,” said Russo.

“It’s definitely more adult toys; and being hand-made, none of them are approved for kids. But that doesn’t mean kids don’t like looking at them.”

Many participating artists are toymakers by craft, Russo explained, but others are artists who were asked to create a toy piece specifically for the show. The types of toys include a wide variety including stuffed animals, action figures, and cast sculptures.

“We even got paper dolls this year, which will be the first time.”

Award-winning toy designer L’amour Supreme will be collaborating with Mishka, a clothing brand, to create a cast resin toy called Ghost Cave, Russo said. Eliza Bolli is making cat-like creature figurines, and Diego Gabriele has created a two-dimensional marionette.

Other participating artists include Joanna Mulder, Moses Jaen, Abe Lincoln Jr., and Thalita McDonnell. MF will also be selling pieces from it's own toy line, MF Toys.

“We have a pretty wide range in artists,” said Russo, who noted that some toys have even traveled from Brazil and Italy. “Some are more well known, and some are just rising.”

MF Gallery, located at 213 Bond St., will feature two dozen artists, and more than 50 hand-crafted toys at its event on Dec. 1. The toys will be available for show and sale by appointment only through Dec. 23, though people are asked to stop by early as products are limited.
