NEW YORK CITY — It's a direct deposit toward helping New York City's worst-impacted neighborhoods.
Starting this month, city employees will be able to instantly contribute a portion of their paychecks to the Hurricane Sandy recovery effort.
All funds will go to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, which has already raised $35 million towards Hurricane Sandy rebuilding efforts, officials said Sunday. The funds are then disbursed among relief groups and organizations.
The announcement came a day after Mayor Michael Bloomberg kicked off a citywide Day of Service, busing volunteers, many of them city workers, to some of the worst-hit parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
“So many city employees have done extraordinary work in responding to Hurricane Sandy, and we want it as easy as possible for all city workers to contribute to the relief efforts,” Bloomberg said in a statement.
“Small donations can make a big difference, and this new program is one more way we can help those most in need.”
The funds, which will start being deducted as soon as Nov. 23, will go towards the most pressing needs of hard-hit areas, supplying water, hot food, baby supplies, toiletries, clothing, blankets, cleaning materials and more, the mayor said.
“I can’t thank our city employees enough for their dedication and hard work and I encourage those who can contribute to do so and help New Yorkers in need," City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said.
All donations are tax deductible, and the paycheck-deposit program will run for two months, spreading over four pay periods for city workers.
