NEW YORK CITY — New Yorkers got their first glimpse of snow this winter, but not in the way they expected.

A nor'easter hit New York Wednesday afternoon, bringing with it powerful winds, freezing rain and even snowfall throughout the city.

Though the city is not evacuating areas in the same way it did during Hurricane Sandy, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon that a high wind warning was in effect, with winds on Wednesday night set to hit 60 mph or higher.

"While this storm is not as dangerous as Sandy was, New Yorkers should still take safety precautions," Bloomberg said.

The city expects a mix of rain and snow through the evening, with rain through the morning, and the city's forecasters expect one to three inches of "wet, slushy stuff," the Mayor said.

Hamilton Beach in Queens, Gerriten Beach and Breezy Point are all likely to be the most affected, and should look to finding somehwere safe to stay, the mayor said.
