Con Edison Urges Customers Below 40th Street To Limit Power Usage

By Emily Frost | November 4, 2012 2:18pm

DOWNTOWN — Just hours after power was restored to most of lower Manhattan Saturday, Con Edison has issued a warning to customers, who were without power for the better part of a week, to limit their electrical use while it continues to work on underground systems.

In a statement Sunday, the company urged those affected — customers below 39th Street on the East Side and below 31st Street on the West Side — "to conserve energy as best as possible while crews work to reinforce the company’s underground systems."

"Customers can help by refraining from using non-essential appliances, such as washers and dryers," the statement urged.

In other words, don't make Sunday laundry day.

For New Yorkers seeking a return to normalcy and the chance to recuperate before next week, Con Ed's warning may be hard to heed.

In addition, the ongoing work may mean apartment-dwellers will have to continue to take the stairs. Con Ed said it was in contact with building owners, asking them to limit some elevator bank use.

Anxious customers still without power should go to www.conEd.com, the company said.
