Last-Minute Halloween Activities for Kids After Hurricane Sandy

By Mary Johnson | October 31, 2012 4:02pm

NEW YORK — Hurricane Sandy may have scared off Halloween plans for many across the city — most notably the cancellation of the annual Village Halloween Parade — but there are still activities being offered for those who can’t bear to miss out on the spooky festivities.

In Midtown, much of which was spared the widespread power outages that have crippled other parts of the city, children ages 4 to 10 can indulge in some swanky trick-or-treating until about 5 p.m. at the Plaza Hotel.

Children can enter at Eloise Shop inside the hotel, located on East 59th Street and Fifth Avenue, and then trick-or-treat throughout the Plaza’s lower-level shops. The event is free and open to the public.

In Queens, children and their families can head to Flushing Town Hall, on Northern Boulevard in Flushing, for Halloween Remixed, a costume party featuring mask-making, candy, dancing and treats. The free event will run from 4 until 7 p.m.

The blog Mommy Poppins reported that several parades will go on, despite the storm's aftermath, although many will begin earlier in the day for safety reasons.

In Williamsburg, the annual Witches Walk will kick off at 4:30 p.m. at The Flying Squirrel on North Sixth Street.

There will also be a post-parade party at Klub4Kidz, at a cost of $10 per person.

In Cobble Hill, a Halloween parade is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. and is free to attend. The Jah Pan Steel Drum Band will lead the parade, and afterward families can trick-or-treat on Clinton Street.

And in West Midwood, a Halloween parade is scheduled to kick off at the intersection of Glenwood and Rugby roads at 4 p.m.

During a press conference, Mayor Michael Bloomberg cautioned against trick-or-treating in areas of the city still without power.

“Be sure you hold your children’s hands,” Bloomberg said. “It’s just dangerous. Cars may not be able to see them.”
