Fall-Inspired Treats Arrive at Local Eateries

COBBLE HILL — As the weather gets cooler, local eateries are warming up for the fall season with new dessert menus and new twists on traditional treats like Thanksgiving pies and ice cream sundaes.

For local sweet spots, like the Brooklyn Farmacy and One Girl Cookies, autumn is one excuse to get creative with its desserts.

An Elvis that Melts in Your Mouth

The Brooklyn Farmacy, located at 513 Henry St., is cooling off for the fall season by adding four new ice cream sundaes to its autumn menu, including one named after the king of rock and roll.

The Farmacy’s most popular sundae, the Elvis sundae, is made up of vanilla ice cream and the Farmacy’s own peanut butter and house-made banana sauce.

“As we talked about decadence and cool weather ingredients, Elvis, known for his food cravings, came into the conversation,” said Gia Giasullo, owner of Brooklyn Farmacy.

The creamy combo is topped with bacon peanut brittle and whip cream.

“He was known to enjoy a sandwich consisting of peanut butter, banana, and by some accounts, bacon," Giasullo added. "We translated that into an ice cream sundae!

“We love this sundae because it features some of our favorite ingredients at the fountain,” she said. “It’s also a great looking sundae.”

Other fall-inspired sundaes include the Great Pumpkin sundae and a seven-layer apple parfait, made with thick vanilla shake layered in house-made apple compote and pie crust crumbles.

Giving Thanks to Pies

One Girl Cookies, located 68 Dean St., is ushering in the new season with a line of Thanksgiving pies and baking courses on how to make them.

This year’s pie lineup includes New York state maple, double crust apple and pumpkin with a cornmeal crust and topped with pepitas.

“As someone whose all time favorite dessert is pumpkin pie, I can say ours really is the best,” said Dawn Casale, co-owner of One Girl Cookies. “The combination of the earthiness from the cornmeal and the bit of saltiness from the seeds is remarkably tasty.”

The bakery will be hosting two classes next month on how to bake Thanksgiving pies from scratch. The first class, scheduled to be held on Nov. 7, will focus on double crusted apple pie. The second, a week later, will focus on pumpkin pie.

For a quick autumn bite, One Girl Cookie’s is also offering its famous pumpkin whoopee pies through the season.
