Film Series Lets Kids Be Kids at Cobble Hill Cinemas

COBBLE HILL — Beginning next month, children as young as two can enjoy the big screen, sing along to their favorite movies and learn a little about film.

Big Films For Little Kids, a program that offers a light introduction of cinema to young children, is kicking off another season of kid-friendly films at Cobble Hill Cinemas.

This year’s line-up includes "Chicken Run," "Haunted House," "I Can Be President" and "Sound of Music."

“I noticed that the children’s movies that were coming out were really in your face, loud and pretty much inappropriate,” said Allison Prete, co-founder and director of Big Films for Little Kids. “We wanted to do a more gentler introduction.”

One Monday at 4 p.m. every month, the largest theater in Cobble Hill Cinemas, at 265 Court St., will be reserved for children ages 2 to 14.

To accommodate the young audience, the theater will have more lighting than the usual and stroller parking is provided.

During the screenings, children are welcome to laugh, sing or even dance in the aisles as the only adults in the theater will be the ones who brought them.

“Kids really like to sing along to some of these films,” said Prete. “Laughter is infectious. The quietest audience we’ve ever had was during the screening of 'Pippy Longstocking.'”

Films in the series, which runs through December, are usually limited to about an hour.

The first flick, "Chicken Run," will be screened on Sept. 24.

On Nov. 5, as a presidential election special, the program will screen an HBO documentary called “I Can Be President: A Kid’s-Eye View,” which features a short appearance by some of the children in the neighborhood.

Tickets are $7, and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
