Heavy Flooding Leaves Parts of Brooklyn, Queens Underwater

NEW YORK — Massive flooding hit Brooklyn and Queens on Wednesday afternoon, after severe thunderstorms drenched the five boroughs.

As the waters rose, roadways became rivers, stranding motorists and inundating basements in many neighborhoods.

In Glendale, Queens, a nun became trapped in her car on Cooper Avenue as a flood raged around her, according to the Daily News.

Sr. Claudia Bradshaw, 86, was caught in seven feet of water underneath the 76th Street overpass until EMTs rescued her.

"God was with us," Bradshaw told the paper.

The storm also walloped Forest Hills, which saw flooding at the busy intersection of 71st Avenue and Austin Street for the second time in three weeks.

"The whole street was flooded on both sides. It was pretty bad," said Carl Gill, who works at the Cohen's Fashion Optical on 71st Avenue.

He said the basement of his store was flooded even though "it wasn't even raining that hard."

A huge puddle quickly formed at the intersection in the flash flood, but quickly disappeared, too.

And the storm wreaked havoc on Brooklyn too.

“Crazy flooding near the B/Q on Kings Highway right now,” tweeted @jorcohen, who also posted a photo of a submerged street corner to Twitter.

“4th Ave in #ParkSlope just totally flooded. Waist deep in some spots. #brooklyn,” tweeted @evatography.

And @hughsansom tweeted: “Severe flooding in Brooklyn this afternoon and evening, including near Gowanus Canal which means sewage and toxic waste.”

The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning for both Brooklyn and Queens that was expected to last until 5:30 p.m. A severe thunderstorm warning was in effect for Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan until 4:45 p.m.
