MANHATTAN — Trojan was back on the streets handing out promotional vibrators on Thursday, one day after a permit snafu had left many New Yorkers who waited in line unsatisfied.
The condom company secured the necessary city permits by Thursday afternoon and sent its "Pleasure Cart" to 14th Street and Ninth Avenue at 5 p.m., where it was greeted by a throng of men and women eager to pick up a free sex toy.
"I want to give it to my mom as a birthday gift," said Aleksandrov Figueroa, an 18-year-old culinary student who first tried unsuccessfully to get one of the free vibrators on Wednesday.
The city shut down Wednesday's vibrator giveaway on Fifth Avenue between East 22nd and 23rd streets, saying it was impeding street and pedestrian traffic. Trojan also shut down "Pleasure Cart" locations in the Financial District and at 14th Street and Third Avenue on Wednesday.
"In an effort to get the activation back up as quickly as possible, and honor Trojan's commitment to bring pleasure to the people, we consolidated to a key location in Manhattan, known for its wide sidewalks and foot-traffic friendly streets for maximum sampling," Esther Walsh, a Trojan spokeswoman, said Thursday.
On Thursday afternoon, the line for free vibrators stretched down 14th Street from Ninth Avenue to Washington Street.
"It just shows a lot of people want pleasure and need to have a release," said Mark Wills, a 35-year-old photographer and bouncer. "It shows, with this line, what New Yorkers are desiring."
Amanda Brown, 25, who works for a health nonprofit, waited for 30 minutes in Midtown for a free vibrator on Wednesday before hearing the promotion would be canceled. But she came out for a second time on Thursday to show support for Trojan.
"I'm really impressed a company is being sex-positive," Brown said.
Brian Wagner, 25, who sells chocolates, said he decided to check out Thursday's event when he heard Trojan had a permit and wouldn't be shut down.
"That was the reason to make the effort to come," Wagner said. "Hopefully, they don't run out."
For those who was unable to make the Thursday giveaway, Trojan reps were at Wednesday's locations to collect email addresses for promotional vibrators.
Trojan aims to hand out 10,000 of its “Vibrating Tri-Phoria” and “Vibrating Pulse intimate massager” vibrators.
