McCarren Pool Seeks Snack Bar and Vendor Proposals

By Meredith Hoffman | August 8, 2012 1:57pm

WILLIAMSBURG — McCarren Pool is on the hunt for vendors to quench its swimmers' thirst and hunger.

The city issued a request for proposals Wednesday for a snack bar and "mobile food units" at the pool, and the Parks Department said it would provide more details about the request later today on its website. Vendors have until Sept. 12 to submit their applications, according to the city's website.

Some local vendors sighed in relief about the proposal request, because they said so far the vending environment around the pool has been a "free for all" that has not favored licensed vendors.

"This is the fair way to do it," said vendor Rich Lasker, a general vendor who claimed that other vendors without licenses were receiving preference to sell items and water even though he had a license.

Up to this point the giant pool has had no official vendors, and has made several arrests of vendors who have sold illegally on or near the pool's grounds.
