Summer Streets Brings Zip Lines and Climbing Walls to Closed Roadways

NEW YORK CITY — Bye-bye cars, hello zip lines.

For the next three Saturdays in August, New Yorkers will have the chance to zip, climb and dance in seven miles of car-free roads from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, as part of the NYC Department of Transportation's fifth annual Summer Streets program.

The series of outdoors events kicks off in Manhattan Aug. 4, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will return Aug. 11 and 18. The streets will be filled with activities such as yoga at 40th Street and Park Avenue; a 25-foot REI rock-climbing wall at Spring and Lafayette Streets; and free exercise and dance classes at 51st Street and Park Avenue.

There will also be a 160-foot zip line and a temporary urban arts project at Foley Square, and a Whole Foods Market picnic area at 25th Street and Park Avenue.

D.O.T. workers will once again fit and distribute thousands of free bike helmets at 51st Street and Park Avenue, first come first serve.

After Summer Streets, outdoor fun including music performances and craft classes will continue this weekend and for the next 30 weekends with the DOT’s Weekend Walks—neighborhood strolls at various sites throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens.
