Broken Hydrant Flooding Causes Water Outage in Hudson Heights

By Carla Zanoni | July 19, 2012 9:33pm

HUDSON HEIGHTS — A broken hydrant valve caused flooding for dozens of Hudson Heights residents and area businesses Wednesday evening, officials said.

A hydrant gate valve, which regulates the flow of water released from a hydrant underground, malfunctioned and flooded the area at just before 4 p.m. during Wednesday’s torrential downpour, according to Department of Environmental Protection officials.

Service was reinstated by 7:15 p.m., but crews remained on the scene throughout Thursday, according to DEP.

Roberto Mejia, 30, head bartender nearby restaurant Bleu Evolution said the four-hour outage affected their business.

“It caused problems,” he said. “Our refrigerator overheated, the ice machine broke down and some of our customers began to leave because the restroom wasn't working."

Con Edison officials responded to the scene, but did not immediately respond to request for comment.
