Columbia Triple Murder Suspect Indicted

MANHATTAN SUPREME COURT — The Bronx man accused of shooting three men at point-blank range inside a BMW near Columbia University last month was indicted on murder charges Tuesday.

Roberto Nunez, 31, pleaded not guilty in the June 7 shooting that left Amaury Rodriguez, 30, Heriberto Suazo, 26 and Luis Catalan, 25, dead inside a parked BMW at West 122nd Street near Claremont Avenue, the NYPD said.

Nunez said only "not guilty" doing the brief hearing — but the uncle of Catalan, Luis Castellar, yelled out "coward" as Nunez, who was held without bail, was taken away in cuffs.

Police originally thought the attack was a revenge killing over a drug ripoff, but sources said that the motive appeared to have been a robbery after what was set up as a drug deal between the three men and Nunez.

Catalan's family said after the hearing that they want more answers — and don't believe he was involved with drugs.

"That's an attack on our family," Castellar said after the hearing. The reports of a drug-related robbery are just a "rumor," he added.

Video surveillance showed Nunez calmly leaving the vehicle, closing the door behind him, and discarding a bloody shirt in a trash can, which police later recovered and matched the DNA to Nunez, according to the criminal complaint. Cops nabbed Nunez nearly a month after the shooting at his brother's home in the Bronx, officials said.

"He's [Nunez] killed me — and he kills me a thousand times, every time I don't see my son," said Norma Castellar, Catalan's mother, after the indictment.
