Zoe Kravitz and Penn Badgley Hit Broadway for Return of 'Fela!' the Musical

THEATER DISTRICT — Sticking with the theme of independence, “Fela!” the musical returned on Broadway Thursday night for a limited run.

The high-energy musical, which had a prior Tony-award-winning stint in 2010, is based on the life of Nigerian afrobeat star and political advocate Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Featuring Fela's original songs performed by Afrobeat band Antibalas and coreography by Bill T. Jones, the show has a very limited engagement — it runs through August 4 only — at Broadway’s Al Hirschfeld Theater.

Celebrities wasted no time in taking in this show, which has been constantly touring since its last run on Broadway in 2009. The eclectic audience included “It” girl Zoe Kravitz and reported boyfriend “Gossip Girl’s” Penn Badgley, “Smash’s” Jaime Cepero, Questlove, Jazzy Jeff, who seems to have lost his “DJ” title, and Broadway regulars Tonya Pinkins and Martha Plimpton.
